From the North

Hello everyone. I have returned from the North, and I have never been so knackered in my life, and I didn't even drive.  We managed to see lots of people, which was excellent. We have sat on a lot of settees and drunk a lot of tea  and spent a lot of time saying things like "How old is he now?" and "Are they still together?"  and "I thought he was dead?" This is the quality of life everyone should be pursuing.  I also met up with someone I used to work with in the bank - the first time in over 20 years. Twenty years! That was lovely and she was very patient with me - even though I couldn't remember anyone's name.

Family trips are not the most conducive to healthy living, however, because there were a couple of Harvester gammons and chips and even a last-minute McDonald's, which is normally against my religion, but there you are. I also spent too much time in a massive Homesense (although I was very controlled and only bought a couple of wooden spoons). Still, it's only every couple of years, and I am back on track with kiwi fruit and bananas, etc. As an aside, I have started eating kiwi fruit with the skins on because, apparently, just under the skin is where the magic happens (in terms of vitamins and roughage, etc.) Well, according to some random GP on Instagram, it is. It's definitely an acquired taste, but not so bad if you cut it into thin slices. Does anyone else eat them like this? HOH says that I am the only person in the world to do this, and he could be right.

Anyway, we are back now and HOH has almost got the feeling back into his legs after two six and a half hour drives. That is it for me this year, now I am not going away again. ( I am aware that it is not that far off November, and I hardly have time to go away this year now). I am even thinking a bit about Christmas. I bought my Baubles for Palestinian Christians from church this morning. It's not the catchiest title, but you get the idea. Actually, just to make it clear, they do come from Bethlehem and are handmade. It's not just a cheap rubbish bag of 100 from B and Ms, I'm also looking into roast potatoes for Christmas Dinner.  I'll be honest with you - I haven't boiled a potato since we moved into the apartment. I have reached a time in my life where I feel it is unnecessary for me. I make no comment on your potato boiling preferences; it is entirely your business, and I hope that you respect my choices as well. HOH and I  don't eat that many potatoes, and if we do, they tend to be ready-made. I'm very keen on Marks' mash and I am unashamed. But what to do about ready-made roasts? I've tried a couple of types now and am not that keen. Any advice gratefully received.

We have quite a busy week ahead, which is not like me. I usually see if things are building up and cut them off at the knees, but I have loads of things to do. HOH is going to Bristol overnight to stay with FOW1. They are going to a gig. Don't ask me who they are seeing. I have no idea. I certainly couldn't whistle you one of his tunes - although he has apparently been on Graham Norton. I have two work Zoom meetings, which I hardly ever do now and am a bit concerned that I may have forgotten how it works, so I end up with the camera and the sound off. Do you remember when we were doing this all the time?  I've also been invited to a church meeting where people will apparently be talking about how to welcome people into church.  Don't ask me. I spent most of this morning's door duty bullying people for humbugs and wondering if it was right to ask the sound desk to turn down the worship a smidgeon because the foyer was like being at the front at a Bruce Springsteen concert, and I couldn't hear any of the questions that visitors were asking me. (Although I had to confess, I didn't have much sympathy for the man who parked in the last car parking space and then came in and asked if this was where he paid to park for Primark.)

This Saturday was Messy Church as well. Did I mention that I was shattered at the weekend? I think I did. We did the plagues of Egypt, and my craft table made snakes out of socks to represent Moses and his staff. (See above). It's a great idea, and the socks were very clean, but some of them were a bit grim, and I did wonder if a lot of unpleasantness could have been avoided if Moses had waved one of these sock puppets under Pharaoh's nose right at the beginning. I think Pharaoh would have been quite keen to see them go.

Right, thanks for reading thus far. I will just leave you with a little memorial if that is ok. My brother Dave would have had a birthday on October 17th, so we bought some yellow roses, which were his favourite. He was a great laugh - and lots of trouble, and I miss him a lot - even after 15 years. So I just wanted to mark the day. Have a great week.

You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. Matthew 5
